Re: the amateur porn model - It’s standard in many circles that if you are getting paid for the images, the photographer has no obligation to give you copies of the photos or let you view the product before it “goes to market,” so to speak. Some photographers will let you see stuff, so always ask, and see if you can find some people who let you keep/view the images. Great thing about freelancing is YOU MAKE THE TERMS - if something about it sounds wrong it’s wrong because YOU ARE YOUR OWN BOSS
YES. YES YES YES. If you are at all in a position to turn down work that skeeves you out/sets off your internal warning signs, DO SO.
I have not done porn myself but I am doing my MA on female mainstream pornography performers from a pro-sex/whore feminist perspective, so I can give insight into the legality of porn production. The key in this case is whether or not a contract was signed and what said contract stated. If the individual signed over all rights to their image, the owners of the company can refuse to give her copies of her work. Shady as hell but true.
Read your contracts. If you don’t like the contract, you don’t have to sign. (If you aren’t signing a contract… sketchy?)
About the porn performer not getting her copies, that’s really sketchy. Anyone you work with should give you a copy, especially if you ask for a portfolio. Something’s not right.
Thanks everyone for your prompt, helpful, and awesome feedback!
